At the end of the series, two of the main characters, Zoe Luther and Ian Reed, are dead, after Zoe is accidentally killed by Ian after he is revealed to have been involved in a diamond smuggling scheme, and Ian by Alice Morgan when he is captured, as Reed goaded both Luther and Mark North to how he slept with Zoe. The series ends with Ian Reed lying apparently dead, confronted by Luther, Mark North, and Alice, who has just shot Ian. The series ends with a cliffhanger ending: in the final shot, as the police close in, Luther says in close-up "Now what?".
