Mark North is a supporting character in Luther.
In series 1, he is the new boyfriend of John Luther's ex-wife Zoe, which puts him at odds with Luther who is broken by their separation. He finds himself stalked by Luther's psychotic and calculating "friend" Alice Morgan. After Zoe's death, Mark and Alice avenge it by killing her murderer Ian Reed.
Following the death of Zoe, Mark and Luther become friends, with Luther sometimes calling on Mark for help if his cases get too heated.
Background[]
Mark is a human rights lawyer: A decent man who is in love with Zoe. He believes that she'd be far happier with him than with her husband (John Luther). Mark works for an international NGO and while he is dedicated to his job, his easy going manner makes him the polar opposite of Luther. Unlike Luther, Mark is afraid to get his hands dirty but Luther drags him in his world in series 2. Although Mark loves Zoe.
Series One[]
During series one, Mark North expresses a dislike towards Luther. He seems to think he is manipulative towards Zoe and wants her to cut contact with him. This is fueled by the fact that he was assaulted by a group of teenage girls who he believes were sent by John Luther. However he is proved wrong when it is revealed that Alice Morgan sent them, to help Luther get his wife back. After Luther sleeps with Zoe while they are a couple, Mark demands she no longer see him or talk to him. Zoe breaks it off for good with Luther and chooses Mark. When Zoe is found dead believed to be killed by Luther he is devasted and angry. He attacks Luther when he sees him, but believes him after Luther explains he did not kill his wife. He is instrumental in helping Luther and Alice prove Ian Reed killed Zoe, by stealing the diamonds in Reed's locker at the police station. He is the final vote when Alice suggests killing Ian to revenge Zoe, when Luther voted no. He is not arrested or faced any consequences for being an accomplice in killing Ian Reed.
Series Two[]
Mark and Luther has become friends in a way in Season 2, and has put the past behind them. They both share grief over loosing Zoe. Mark also helps Luther hide Jenny Jones for a while when she is in trouble and does not seem to mind helping out Luther.
Series Five[]
Years later, Mark has now settled down with someone else. Luther calls on a surprised Luther to get help to hide Alice Morgan and Benny Silver as they are on the run from ruthless crime lord George Cornelius. Mark isn't too happy but agrees to keep them as well as they are gone by the time his girlfriend return.
They are taken hostage by a hitman who has been sent to kill Luther. Benny is shot dead by the hitman when giving a description to Luther over the phone. Mark and Alice are saved by Luther, and Alice returns to Mark's home to help him clean up the evidence. Feeling disillusioned by Luther, Alice warns Mark to stay away from him and to never let Luther back into his life again. Mark attempts to appeal to Alice to just let go, but before he could continue his girlfriend arrives home and Alice disappears for good.

- He is one of the few main characters to be involved with Luther and remain alive by the end of the series.
