Luther is a British psychological crime drama starring Idris Elba as the titular character DCI John Luther broadcasted on BBC One. The series is set to debut on May 4, 2010, and the first series will run for a total of six episodes.

Overview

The show follows the character of John Luther, a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind cannot always save him from the strength of his passions. Creator Neil Cross stated that Luther contains influences from both Sherlock Holmes and Columbo, as the character of Luther's intelligence when it comes to solving crimes is comparable to Holmes' and the show makes use of the "inverted detective format" wherein the audience is aware of the criminal but not of how they will be caught, as opposed to the conventional idea of the audience discovering the criminal as the characters do [1].

Production

Stefan Schwartz will direct two of the six episodes, whereas Brian Kirk will direct an unknown amount. Series creator and writer Neil Cross will be writing an unknown number of episodes. Leila Kirkpatrick will be the line producer for the entire series and Katie Swinden will be the producer for an unknown number of episodes. Tim Fleming will be providing series cinematography for two episodes. Katie Weiland and Victoria Boydell will be involved in the series' film editing, with Weiland editing two episodes. Andy Morgan was responsible for the entire series' casting, Paul Cross provided production design and Adam A. Makin was behind the series' art direction.
