David Robey is the main antagonist of the 2023 crime thriller Luther: The Fallen Sun.

He is a tech billionaire moonlighting as a serial killer who uses surveillance technology to manipulate and kill civilians. He is the archnemesis of John Luther.

Biography

In 2007, one of Robey's first victims was his wife who after finding out he was convicted of sexual assault, attempted to leave him but he set their house on fire which burned and scarred his wife, this made her need to have special treatment and care ensuring she could never leave him. Following the fire, Robey was never convicted of arson, but the fire was ruled suspicious by the authorities.

Years before Robey begins his crime spree, whilst waiting for a bus at a bus stop he meets a police detective named John Luther who he offers a juicy fruit. At some point, Robey uncovers something private about DS Archie Woodward, who he blackmails into supplying him with police documents and information.

In 2023, Robey contacts a young man named Callum Aldrich whom he has blackmailed into meeting him by threatening to expose his "screenshots".Callum whilst working late sees this and arranges to meet Robey.

While on his way there Aldrich sees a car accident and exits his car and approaches, he sees someone on the ground who appears to be injured and a woman dead still inside the vehicle then Callum panics and calls the emergency services however behind him the figure on the floor gets up and attacks him, kidnapping him. Eventually, the authorities arrive at Robey and watch from a nearby crowd. He sees DCI John Luther at the scene and becomes concerned about his involvement, Robey uncovers various illegal acts Luther has committed as a detective, and Luther is arrested and then imprisoned. Following Callum’s kidnapping, Robey joins a support group under the alias of Tommy. He says he lost his wife in a house fire and begins to bond with Callum’s mother, the two of them form a relationship.

Years later still in possession of Callum's phone, he uses it to lure Callum’s mother and various other relatives of people he has abducted to the abandoned mansion. When the relatives find the corpses of their loved ones hanging from the ceiling, only to be immediately cremated in front of them, they flee the mansion as the flames consume it whilst Robey who is outside watches them, inside the mansion Robey has set up various cameras from his audience to watch.

Robey later sends a recording of Callum's dying pleas and his being tortured to former DCI John Luther who is in prison. He teases Luther for failing to save Callum and mentions their previous encounter at the bus stop.

A few days later, Robey heads to Piccadilly Circus, where Raine and Luther trace him along an armed police unit. Luther confronts him there, suddenly Robey takes a man hostage and threatens to kill him however Robey having orchestrated the whole event has people that he has blackmailed cause a distraction by killing themselves via jumping from buildings and crashing cars.

DCI Odette Raine attempts to arrest Luther but fails, Robey eventually lets the man go when the police close in, Robey then escapes into the London Underground where Luther pursues him. Eventually the two head to an abandoned section and engage in a fight with Robey trying to stab Luther with a knife, an armed policeman then arrives on the scene but Robey stabs him in the leg causing him to bleed out, eventually killing him. Luther chases Robey but loses him, more police arrive on the scene but fail to arrest Luther or Robey.

After DCI Raine fails to capture Robey he decides to kidnap Raine's daughter, Anya. Robey breaks into Raine’s house and teases and taunts Anya via a speaker, terrifying her. Robey then succeeds in capturing Anya. Robey leaves England by ferry and travels to his mansion in rural Norway, his base of operations.

Robey arrives at his mansion unaware that Luther and Rainie now know where he is, eventually the two arrive where they discover his operation. Robey hangs several of his victims inside the mansion and he dresses up one of them in Raine’s daughter's clothing, Raine believes it to be Anya but to her relief, it’s just another victim. Luther wanders into the mansion where Robey ambushes and captures him meanwhile Arkady Kachimov Robey’s Henchman captures Raine.

A while later, Robey, has Luther chained up and Raine on a chair and has set up his livestream called "The Red Bunker" for his followers, Robey also has a table full of various weapons ready for torturing and also has Arkady ready with Anya to torture her, Robey gives Luther and Raine an ultimatum Raine stabs Luther or Anya is suffocated by Arkady, at first Raine refuses but after see her daughter tortured she gives in with persuasion from Luther and stabs him but only slightly wounding him. Robey then asks Luther to hammer Raine’s knee but Luther refuses and tells the audience watching that the authorities know about them, suddenly all of the followers begin to turn off much to Robey's disappointment.

Luther then attacks another henchman, Nilsson killing him with the hammer. Robey then escapes and locks down the room but Luther gets out in time. Raine fights Arkady but the room begins raining petrol eventually defeating him and sets the room on fire. Meanwhile, Robey escapes gets into his jeep and drives away but Luther hangs on to the edge of the vehicle and breaks the window managing to board the jeep, he and Robey fight inside the vehicle and eventually crash into the frozen lake where Robey preserves his victims. Robey and Luther struggle in the water but the latter can get his hands on the controls, which are for the room where Raine and Anya are still trapped, Luther can free them.

Robey attempts to find where the jeep crashed in the ice but panics and drowns with some of his frozen victims next to him, thus avenging all his victims. Sometime later all the bodies from the lake are recovered including Robey’s.

Abilities

Robey is shown to be a skilled fighter, especially with a knife during his encounter with Luther in the train station, also he is very stealthy being able to kidnap people even Luther and sneak about undetected in Raine’s house to kidnap her daughter.

Relationships

Georgette Robey

Not much is known about David’s and Georgette’s relationship before the fire, however, they were a couple who were married following the fire due to David being convicted of a sexual assault, she attempted to leave him and David burned and injured her.

When David visits her in the hospital, he is shown with flowers suggesting he may still love her, during this she becomes visibly scared of him. David is shown to trust her by describing his upcoming scheme to her.

John Luther

At their first meeting, Luther never knew who Robey was. When Luther is investigating Callum’s kidnapping Robey uncovers information about Luther, suggesting that he may have known about Luther's past and his ability to catch serial killers. Robey is shown to enjoy taunting and teasing Luther about his failure to capture him and rescue Callum.

During their confrontation at Piccadilly Circus, Robey attempts to stab Luther but fails. It is shown the two of them are a match for each other via their fighting skills. Whilst at Robey’s mansion he and Luther are shown to have developed their rivalry even more.when Luther, after making a speech gets Robey’s viewers to turn off. Eventually, Luther chases Robey onto a frozen lake, they then crash into it and go deep underwater both of them struggle and fight each other but Luther is shown to be able to hold his breath longer, due to Robey drowning.

Personally

A sadist in the extreme, Robey revels in death and violence, hosting his chatroom for sick individuals to watch him torture and kill his victims Robey is shown to be a controlling man, He also enjoys the power he has over his victims and has a truly twisted and warped sense of humour. However, Robey was still a man of culture, wearing a stylish silk dressing gown and sipping Scotch in his posh London flat which he has with fine sculptures and classical art.

• Andy Serkis says he was drawn to the role because he thought Robey's weaponisation of the internet served as a dark reflection of the Age of Information.
• Robey is one of few Luther antagonists not to be killed by anyone but dies accidentally.
